The movie is about a housekeeper in the 1950's who falls in love with a Dior dress, and decides she is going to do whatever it takes to own it.

Okay. Here's my review. . .

It. Was. Delightful. Leslie Manville is terrific in this.

She is a war widow who works as a house cleaner, just making ends meet. One of her clients, played by the ubiquitous Anna Chancellor (who has popped up in several things on my TV of late (Hotel Portofino, The Split, Grantchester) has left a gor-ge-ous gown in her bedroom (which Aida is tidying up) and falls in love with it. She there and then determines that she is going to buy it for herself and begins saving up her pounds and shillings to do just that. By several strokes of luck and a mistake about the military pay for her deceased husband, she has what she needs to fulfill her quest to Paris.

Even though the first person she runs into at Dior tries to give her the heave ho, she is so determined. Other Dior employees encourage her. I ended up really rooting for her to get the dress. I don't want to give away much more, so I don't spoil your enjoyment.

Jason could have more screen time, but then, I always feel that way.

Thanks for the positive review, Helen.

Lucky you to have seen it - there is something ironic about such a British film being released in the US before the UK. We have to wait till 30 September.

Maybe the production company is American? It's still a bit strange...

Thanks for your review, Helen. :D

Spent a wonderful couple of hours in the company of this movie this afternoon. I adored it. It was charming, good natured and kind. Lesley Manville was immense and I loved her portrayal of Ada Harris a woman who has suffered, but is still a decent, loving and kind woman with a dream. Jason as Archie is a real treat playing a man who in such a small way is a true romantic hero. I wished we had seen more of him but his role and Jason' portrayal is lovely. The cast helped me invest in the characters and I wanted great things for nearly all of them and the visuals were just beautiful.

A true jewel of a movie.
